« Back to Glossary Index

A geographic region within a country that has economic and other laws that are more oriented towards a free market economy than typical national laws. National laws can be suspended within a special economic zone. The general purpose of this type of structure is to increase foreign direct investment in the country by foreign investors and thereby promote foreign trade, industrial development, economic competitiveness, and job creation in the country. The “ZEE” category covers a wide range of more specific zone types, including free trade zones (FTZ), export processing zones (EPZ), free zones (FZ), industrial parks or estates (IE), free ports, urban enterprise zones, and others.
